> Black Ceylon Tea History

HISTORY OF BLACK CEYLON TEA

Though the history of our tea estates dates back to the 19th Century, when British Planters cleared the land and planted the first seedlings brought down from Assam, India, we, as a company came into being towards the end of the last century. Back then, we were known simply as Talawakelle Plantations Limited. Incorporated on 22nd June 1992, the 12 high grown and 5 low grown estates were acquired by Hayleys Plantation Services Limited on 1st January 1998. We were re-christened as Talawakelle Tea Estates Limited in 2004.

Since 1992, we have been producing and marketing over 10 million kilograms of premium black tea each year. Adhering to the long tradition of providing high quality, world renowned Ceylon tea, we have always believed that there is nothing better we can do to honor this tradition than to continue to offer tea where the leaves have been carefully plucked from among the finest tea land of the country and where the production process is showered with constant attention, both visually and aromatically, in order to ensure the correct flavour for each batch.

As we move forward into the future, we pledge to provide you with the best tea possible.
A taste of tea, a taste of qualité.

Tea Estates

The aroma, the taste, the smooth delivery of stimulation and pleasure we create through our teas are the results of the rich soil, the unique weather patterns and the people on our seventeen tea estates situated in the middle and the south of Sri Lanka.

In order to produce a quality tea, all the estates envisage a “quality policy” based on consistency and attention to detail as well as good agricultural practices. Our cumulative capital expenditure every year reflects our commitment to key areas of development; field development, factory modernization, quality assurance systems, energy cost saving and social welfare development. We are proud of the harmonious industrial environment on our tea gardens where human resources and industrial relations exist side by side with the Company continuing to invest in skills development, health, sanitation and housing each year.
